LIVE: Positivity

The Loft, 5th December

Positivity sets out to be a party night for people who love all things hip-hop, funk and soul. And what a job they do. While the majority in attendance were obvious hip-hop fans (recognisable by the abundant baggy jeans and hoodies), it was a pleasant surprise to see a mixed crowd. For example the tight-jeaned indie kids fitting in with the head-bobbing hip-hop vibe.

After Mr Krum had warmed the crowd up, Southpaw and DJ Foly took to the decks for a spin through some original breaks and hip-hop classics. “Can I get open” by Jay Z’s first group, Original Flavor, Nice & Smooth’s “Hip Hop Junkies”, Pete Rock’s remix of EPMD & LL Cool J’s “Rampage” and Chad Jackson’s “Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked)” all did their bit to keep the crowd moving.

Beathoven played the evening out with a selection of predominately soul-infused tunes. Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” was an obvious crowd pleaser as was Edwin Starr’s 1968 classic “25 Miles” and The Flirtations’ “Nothing But a Heartache” was a forgotten gem. Marlena Shaw’s “California Soul” being cut short was a shame as I’m sure there wasn’t a person present who wasn’t enjoying the tune. The comedy element of the evening was provided by an unfortunate (bad) wannabe pole dancer who spent a good couple of hours flashing legs and much more at anyone who needed to get to the bar. However her carry-on seemed to have the opposite of the desired effect and scared off every male who dared venture near. The excellent Biz Markie flyer artwork promoting the event (designed by Mr Krum) stated that there would be 50% hip-hop, 22% funk, 17% original breaks and 11% soul. I’ll have to take his word for it as I was far too busy bouncing around having fun. I suppose I’ll just have to check next time
