Gordon Withers, the celebrated rock cellist known for his dynamic work with J Robbins Band and New Freedom Sound, has unveiled an inspired cover of “Never Meant” by American Football. Taking one of emo’s most cherished anthems and filtering it through his uniquely expressive cello arrangements, Withers delivers a fresh take that bridges post-punk intensity with new classical flair.
Out on 17 July, the release pairs “Never Meant” with a thoughtful rendition of “Calba’s Last” by 90s post-hardcore band Ethel Meserve. The tracks were mastered by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Audio and form part of the ‘Covers For A Cause’ series, with proceeds benefitting The Southern Poverty Law Center, continuing Withers’ commitment to positive change through music.
Withers brings decades of experience to the table, having lent his talents to a diverse spectrum – from the intricate soundscapes of We All Inherit The Moon to collaborations with names like Zach Barocas. His solo albums showcase his flair for reimagining alternative and punk classics, always with profound reverence and a twist of inventiveness.
The decision to cover “Never Meant” comes after Withers’ cello riffs from the song won hearts on social media, prompting a fully realised arrangement that walks the line between nostalgia and innovation. Coupled with the atmospheric Ethel Meserve cover, the new single highlights Withers’ ability to find emotional depth in underground favourites and underscores both his technical prowess and curatorial ear.
Both American Football and Ethel Meserve are out on tour this July, with Withers joining Ethel Meserve for their run of shows, marking their first performances together since the 1990s.
