ISQ (Irene Serra) brings her new live show to The Folklore Rooms in Brighton on 7 November, presenting material from her fifth album “The Silence Is Deafening”, released 23 October.
Recorded after an eight-year gap, the record marks a tonal shift for Serra: darker, guitar-driven and cinematic, drawing on alternative-pop and jazz textures. Across eight tracks she moves between the personal and the political, exploring themes of feminine resilience, intergenerational wisdom, migration and family. Serra describes the album as a tribute to her mother’s resilience and to the many women whose stories echo that experience.
The album opens with “On Shoulders of Giants”, a soft alt-pop piece written during Italian ski tours that broadens into a reflection on gratitude and the people who shape our lives. Other highlights include the rhythmic lead single “Animal”, the intimate “No Time At All” and the urgent, migration-themed “Kindred Spirit”, which closes with a drum solo. The closing track “She Walks Through Fire” reclaims the witch archetype as a symbol of wisdom and endurance.
For the Brighton show Serra’s quartet features musicians with credits spanning the Cinematic Orchestra and Neil Cowley Trio, blending improvisational fluency with contemporary edge. ISQ’s work has attracted attention across the UK and Italy over two decades, noted in outlets such as Time Out, Jazz FM and Clash.
The Folklore Rooms performance is listed as a matinee; expect an intimate setting suited to the album’s quieter, atmospheric moments and its more forceful, guitar-forward passages alike.
