Bonobo, a jewel in Ninja Tune’s crown, readies a soulful set of languid grooves and funky breaks for a set at Concorde 2, representing his origins with Brighton independent label Tru Thoughts.
The local imprint rose to prominence with the release of man-behind-the-monkey-name Simon Green’s debut LP Animal Magic, later seeing success with releases from the likes of Quantic and Zed Bias.
Rising to a near-equal profile to labelmates (on Ninja Tune) Cinematic Orchestra, Green is now synonymous with a similar mix of downtempo, jazz and electronica, though erring more on the dance music side since 2010’s Black Sands. His earlier album Days To Come saw Bonobo launched into new spheres with an even more infectious brand of live-sample-tinged electronica, key track ‘Ketto’ becoming ubiquitous on adverts and TV programmes. Despite this, Black Sands and an eclectic career have shown Green capable of greatness across the board. The remix album for Black Sands, released earlier this year, proved his credentials in the dance music world proper, with reworks from artists like Machinedrum, Floating Points and Mark Pritchard. Often touring with a full band, Green’s DJ sets conjure up the breadth of his talents, with Thursday’s set promising to bring the house down(tempo) in style.
Joined by Robert Luis, the man who signed Bonobo to Tru Thoughts back in the day, ensuring a long night celebrating roots and community. 22:00 – 03:00, £14 adv + BF
