Dananananaykroyd

Audio, 28th October 2009

Bringing back the 90s vibe of grunge rock, Yorkshire based Dinosaur Pile-Up closed the support slot with a fantastic guitar-driven set. Following on from the northern trio, Glaswegian electro-indie kids Dananananaykroyd took to the stage (if you could call it that), and were in a league of their own.

As the lights went out, the band kicked straight into their first track, which instantly obtained movement from the small crowd that showed up. Heading straight into song two, the backing vocalists started chanting “Dananananaykroyd! Dananananaykroyd!” It was at this point during their song ‘Watch This!’ that vocalist Calum Gunn opened the song with “Hiya Brighton” making the start of this evening feel very personal.

Something unique about the band’s raw and edgy sound is the fact that Gunn also plays the drums alongside co-vocalist John Baillie Junior. The pair have a vibrancy when singing together on stage that get the crowd buzzing, even if they do encourage the fans to participate in the ‘wall of cuddles (aka wall of death)’.

The six-piece band from Scotland didn’t intend to take much seriously as you can probably tell by the title of their name (a play on Canadian actor Dan Aykroyd), and just put on an outrageous performance in which the audience as well as themselves thoroughly enjoyed. As they screamed and squawked their way through songs from their debut album ‘Hey Everyone!’ the crowd developed a little bit of a personality and began to tear up Brighton’s underground basement. Whether it was the gang vocals (audience included) during ‘Some Dresses’ that got your body rocking, or the tenacious drumbeats that built into a mammoth crescendo during upbeat ‘The Greater Than Symbol And The Hash’ that had your heads nodding, the sextet provided a show of chemistry and vehemence with Brighton’s Audio venue.

If there was one thing that the Scottish lads could do, it was to put on an energetic performance. They knew what buttons to push in order to get a successful result of enjoyment from the audience. Although Dananananaykroyd are from across the borders, they are definitely welcome down to the southern coast of lights and sound anytime.
