For the fifth year running, Impressive PR takes over The Black Lion on Friday 18th May with one of the highlight free showcases of The Alternative Escape. ‘Impressive PR By The Sea’ presents a carefully curated line-up of emerging acts including NOËP, Bakers Eddy. Yukon Era, Thom Artway, a special headline set by Diesel Park West’ John Butler and one the team favourite UK breaking acts, LIFE. Covering a diverse range of genres, the showcase is seven-strong exhibition of international acts, with the addition of award-winning music journalist, broadcaster and DJ Simon Price behind the decks.
Diesel Park West frontman and chief songwriter, John Butler, headlines our stage this year to celebrate the vinyl reissue of his critically acclaimed 1997 solo album ‘The Loyal Serpent’. The legendary Leicester band released 7 albums between 1989 and 1995, ushering in the 60s-revitialist, “baggy” movement with the likes of The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. With a keen eye on song-craft, much like contemporaries Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) and Mike Scott (The Waterboys), Butler and Diesel Park West heralded a new generation of UK alternative rock, which soon became a global phenomenon. After spending 21 years off the radar, the American label, Palo Santo Records, has taken what Q Magazine called “intoxicating alchemy of Celtic-like passion” and delicately remastered and reassembled the parts for a 2018 audience in glorious gatefold, double-LP wax. https://joncbutlermusic.com
Described by DIY as “an unhinged depiction of modern day punk”, LIFE anti-establishment and social commentary underscores the raw nature of their British grassroots post-punk and the new wave of youth and working class discontent. Known for their a strong DIY ethic, clever wordplays and energetic performances, the band released their highly-praised debut album, ‘Popular Music’, last year. The self-release made it into BBC Radio 1’s best albums of the year list, with the band picked by the likes of DIY, Metro, So Young and Fred Perry Subculture as their ‘Ones to Watch’ for 2017. Growing support across key radio shows including BBC 6’s Steve Lamacq, which praised them for being “…weirdly uncompromising and addictive”, as well as BBC Radio 1, which culminated with a live session at Maida Vale and a performance at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, where they were the only unsigned act on the line up. With their live credentials already including performances at international festivals including this year’s SXSW, Reading & Leeds, Latitude, Reeperbahn, The Great Escape and Boardmasters, as well as supporting slots with Slaves on top of their own UK headline tour, the band is currently working on new material for 2018. https://lifeband.co.uk
Brash and unapologetic, fast rising New Zealand bred, Melbourne-based punk rockers Bakers Eddy have been making a name for themselves in the New Zealand and Australian punk scene touring with Australian #1 hitters Gang Of Youths, award-winning The Rubens and Grammy-nominated USA hottest band Highly Suspect. Having established themselves as one of the most in-demand and exciting young punk-rock bands, Bakers Eddy are part of a new wave of acts who have been enlivening the local punk scene. With growing support across international key tastemakers including Amazing Radio and key Australian online outlets such as Pilerats  and Tone Deaf, the band has already notched up memorable performances at Kiwi music’s biggest parties Homegrown, Rock The Park and Going Global Music Summit, and are now ready to take their ferocious attitude and lyrical honesty to the UK playing their first Great Escape show before heading to Germany. With the release of their new single ‘Good Decisions’, the band is ready to take the international music scene by storm. https://www.bakerseddy.com
Hailing from Auckland NZ, four piece post punk outfit Yukon Era, are one of the youngest bands to perform at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. The boys have just completed a 15 date NZ/AUS tour, seeing them sell out four shows in NZ, supporting their latest single ‘Tongue’ which reached #3 on the NZ Alternative charts. Their first two Eps garnered attention from the likes of Noisey, Tone Deaf, Impose Magazine, Sniffers, and The Wireless. Having extensively toured NZ both as headliners, they went onto support Mac Demarco, Japandroids and METZ, among others. Named as one of the Top 8 Kiwi Guitar Tracks of 2016 by Impose Magazine which praised them for their “old-fashioned rock and roll cut from the same cloth as Polvo and Fugazi – embedded with a hint of classic kiwi jangle. A post-punk band on the rise, with the confidence and skill to make it big”, Yukon Era are aiming high, and with the release of a new single ‘Knife Skies of Quietly’ on 8th June, a debut show at The Great escape and their upcoming debut album slot for Autumn 2018, it’s clear that Yukon Era are aiming high. https://www.facebook.com/yukonera/
Estonian singer-songwriter and producer NOËP has been busy with the release of his debut EP ‘Heads In The Clouds’. The genre-bending artist collaborates with British house production duo Tough Love on ‘Offside’, while the Clash-approved ‘New Heights’ serves as the opening of the five-track EP. Since his debut single ‘Move’ in 2015, NOËP has quickly amassed over 14 million streams on Spotify, instantly sold out headline shows in his home country and has been championed by the likes of Red Bull, Indie Shuffle and Dancing Astronaut, just to name a few. Having already notched up memorable live performances at international festivals including Reeperbahn, Eurosonic, Flow Festival,Positivus, Weekend Festival and Waves – as well as headlining London’s Oslo in 2017 - NOËP has been chosen to perform at MUSEXPO, the annual international music, media & technology conference in LA, before appearing at for the first time at The Great Escape in Brighton – http://www.noepmusic.com
Singer-songwriter Thom Artway is already one of the most respected young musicians in the Czech music scene. Signed to Warner Music, the talented artist has already set himself on the path of international success with his debut album ‘Hedgehog’. His music perfectly combines a modern sound with classic songwriting, creating captivating folk pop songs with the use of his distinctive voice, memorable top lines and the use of introspective lyrics. Inspired by British songwriters he grew up busking in the streets of Prague, before travelling and playing across Australia. His debut single ‘I Have No Inspiration’, dominated the Czech charts for nearly two year becoming a domestic hit, culminating with Thom winning two of the most prestigious Czech music awards and enabled him to perform at some of the leading European festivals. Making his debut at The Great Escape, Tom is ready to release his UK single ‘All I Know’’ on 1st June, mastered by John Davis at London’s Metropolis Studios, the new cut is  the taken from his upcoming sophomore album set for release in autumn 2018 – http://www.thomartway.com
