Hot on the heels from touring the UK in January, Australian singer-songwriter Nigel Wearne returns to the UK this summer. He plays the Cambridge Folk Festival then onto The Folklore Rooms in Brighton.
Hailing from Gunditjmara country in the deep south of Australia, Nigel Wearne saunters after dark in the music of the night. Blending blues, folk and Americana-noir, he’s a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with diverse influences from Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Gillian Welch. A deep thinker and truth seeker with a penchant for all things peculiar, he sings of human frailty, grace and the cosmos; songwriting that cuts to the bone.
Nigel has toured Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK and Canada and he’s performed at a long list of music festivals, including MerleFest (USA), UK Americana Music Week, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the Adelaide Guitar Festival. His sophomore album, ‘Black Crow’ garnered wide critical acclaim including a 4-STAR review in Rolling Stone, a nomination for Best Country Album at the Music Victoria Awards and debuted at #1 on Australia’s AMRAP Charts. A storyteller at heart, Nigel paints lyrical pictures with “the narrative-fuelled prose of Paul Kelly” – BEAT MAGAZINE.
“Poignant and mysterious” – MAVERICK MAGAZINE UK
“Intoxicating New Orleans-tinged Americana… a bit of Waits, some Early James and C.W Stoneking” – POST TO WIRE
“An eruption of energy, rhythm and melody” – RHYTHMS MAGAZINE
Opening the evening will be Nick Pynn, a British musician and composer noted for his use of bass pedals and live looping with electro-acoustic stringed instruments. He’s been described as an ‘avant folk’ artist, whose early interests were in world folk and experimental music.
Nick performs on a variety of instruments including 5 string violin, guitars, mountain dulcimer, mandocello and banjo. He’s also performed as a sideman with many artists over the years, including Billy Bragg, Arthur Brown, Steve Harley, Beverley Martyn, B*Witched, Mike Heron (Incredible String Band), Jane Bom-Bane and comedians Stewart Lee, Boothby Graffoe, Kevin Eldon, Jo Neary, Phil Nichol, Rich Hall and Omid Djalili. Nick also plays with Stomp’s ‘Lost and Found Orchestra’ and performs regularly with Kate Daisy Grant.
