Venetian Snares, The Haunt, Mon 24 September

Master in nightmarish breakcore Venetian Snares prepares a tinnitus-inducing set of monstrous staccato for those who dare at The Haunt.
Dubstep’s shifty old uncle, breakcore finds devout fans in insomniac special brew-supping tech-heads often found at Bangface Weekender or in gutters after nights of apocalyptic debauchery. Or at least it thinks it does (they mostly live on the Youtube comments section slagging off brostep). Similarly does Venetian Snares present himself as the grizzled post-Aphex Twin maniac. The hairy Canadian is just as infamous for his hyper-complex drum programming as his tendency for offensive gibber(gabba)ish that fails to come across as ironic, for inane soundbites about ‘retardation’ and song titles like ‘Mutant Cunt Sniffer’ (whose fan video is a dizzying montage of pixellated clips of Dawn of The Dead).
Of course, this is all part of the appeal. Venetian Snares, whose real name is supposedly Aaron Funk, is a veteran of the field. His grasp of twisted Amen breaks matches the precision of higher profile comparisons Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, like whom he is just as capable of productions of surprising orchestral beauty and subtlety. But often they too give out to gory glitch nevertheless, as Funk is truly concerned with knocking the drums out of your ears post-digital style via inconceivable rhythmic shifts and microscopic syncopation.
Be sure to attend for some gluttonously base, perversely relentless thrills.
