Supreme dubstep chief and Radio 1 DJ Skream unleashes his ‘back to basics’ Skreamizm tour on Concorde2 in the wake of Shakedown Festival.
Notable by his absence from that festival’s bill, also featuring Katy B and Chase & Status amongst others, Skream is set to follow a day of blistering big name dance music in Stanmer Park.
In the seven years since ‘Midnight Request Line’ became the most popular dubstep crossover ever and propelled Croydon’s previously opaque scene in to the mainstream, Skream has gone on to cement dubstep in the genre canon. Remixing La Roux to ubiquitous popularity across the underground-mainstream spectrum, he went on to follow a similar tangent to his partner in grime Benga (who he shares his Radio 1 slot with). Together forming dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man, their stadium bass saturated dubstep dynamics into the club vocabulary with no small influence on the genre’s now commonplace worldwide recognition. Splitting skank-happy populists and die-hard purists about the value of commercial dubstep (and its American ‘brostep’ tangent), he has nevertheless proven a vital component of a now household genre.
That latter camp might quash their hating for the Skreamizm tour, which looks to take the music back to ground level: “a dark room, a massive soundsystem, an extended set and a focus firmly on the music”. No doubt still full of bangers (Skream has no gripes with bass wobbles), the set will likely provide the fluid sonic journey so often noted missing by dance music purists from contemporary DJ sets: “It’s about people going out, actually zoning in, and becoming at one with the music.”
