Before coming to the band, frontman Natalia may strike a chord of a different kind for some as she’s also an actress, with a CV including roles in the Harry Potter films and HBO’s George Martin series, Game of Thrones.
The celebrity name-drop out of the way, expect Molotov Jukebox to lay down a range of styles as they quickstep and bop amongst genres including gypsy, samba and dubstep. Regardless of the tracks they play, the six-strong ensemble push forward with a wall of attitude and emotion. The trumpet and accordion add some kitsch to their beat, and the whole package goes in through the ears and bypasses everything else to pull directly at your feet and get you dancing.
With a gig history including UK festivals and a spell in Brazil, the appeal and attraction of the band appears to be broader than the typical western group, so much so that they’ve even christened their own genre, Gyp-Step.
Support comes from Nimmo & The Gauntletts (think folk-pop Florence and the Machine), and Buffo’s Wake (more Romani than Gypsy, expect a dark, macabre melodic … something. They’d be perfect playing the soundtrack to a Hills Have Eyes-style horror from the old country.)
Entry is £10 and the show starts at 19:30
