The thought of January making you depressed already? Here’s something that will put a smile on your face! Visiting Brighton during a nine date UK tour, British band Daughter play the beautiful Parish Church of St. Mary’s in cultured Kemp Town. With gothic style architecture and stunning Victorian stained glass windows, it’s the perfect setting for beautiful front woman Elena Tonra’s haunting vocals.
Described by some as experimental folk, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella join Tonra to make up this talented London collective who, having performed together for 18 months, will no doubt convert another packed gig into new fans here in Brighton next month.
A productive time for the band, having recorded and released “The Wild Youth” EP with Ian Grimble of Communion in November last year they made waves both within the industry and blogosphere, leading to an exciting 2012. April was an equally important landmark for the band, seeing them go from playing a sold out show at Islington’s 700-capacity Assembly Hall to signing a record deal with 4AD in just seven days. The calm after the storm was the release of new single “Smother”, recorded in the infamous Abbey Road Studios.
Not dissimilar to the likes of Lucy Rose, check out standout tracks “Landfill” and the afore mentioned “Smother.” The latter having been playlisted by both 6 music and Radio 1, with station DJ Huw Stephens making it his single of the week.
And does the excitement stop there for this humble London trio? No. Currently working on their debut album, 2013 looks set to be another busy year, with a sold out show at Hackney Empire in January already on the cards and what will surely turn out to be a summer packed full of festival gigs.
7pm, January 17, £12 adv, 14’s+. This show is sold out.
