Chet Faker a.k.a Nicholas James Murphy, is destined to become Australia’s next biggest export and the chilled out, intimate show at Audio payed testament to that fact. Astonishing that he and his band managed to create such a personal experience for the sold out crowd in the 240 capacity venue, as the show was originally meant to be held at The Hope, a venue capable of holding 100. The upgrade came on account of the overwhelming demand for tickets from Brightonian fans, but it was quite impressive to see so many Australian admirers in the crowd, presumably long time fans, incredibly proud of the fact that they managed to keep Nicholas a secret for so many years.
Each song played stemmed from the 2012 EP, Thinking in Textures which received electric reviews across the board upon its release. One of the most relieving things was that all the tracks worked great in front of a live audience, something that can’t always be said for every other folk/electronic/R&B acts, few as they may be. Chet’s live band consisted of only 3 other members, ‘Josh’ on bass, ‘Danny’ on guitar and the mechanically brilliant ‘Sam’ who managed to play the largely processed studio drums live, and improve on them in almost every way. Even the impromptu drum solo that wavered in and out of standard time signatures impressed the cheering crowd, not something that can usually be said of such a relaxing event.
Nicholas himself bringing to mind folk artists like Fink or Iron & Wine with his raspy soulful vocals, was in full swing interacting with over the crowd and visibly enjoying himself, exclaiming how taken aback he was at the large congregation before him. Ending the set with his best known single ‘No Diggity’ finally released the crowd into an all singing all dancing party, exiting the stage to chants of ‘One more song’, which unfortunately never came. Chet Faker is currently on a European tour and can be caught playing various shows in Germany from the 25th to the 29th of May.
