Blah Blah Blah w/ Disclosure @ Digital, Saturday November 10
UK dance music’s brightest-faced brothers continue in their domination of the mainstream with a DJ set at Digital on Saturday.
Having provided the nigh-unmatched contender for remix of the year with their take on Jessie Ware’s ‘Running’ nine months ago, these Surrey brothers have since gone onto joining that Mercury nominee on PMR records and nearing the top 10 with single ‘Latch’. And their average age would only just be old enough to start hitting clubs as a punter.
Though their music makes erudite nods to varied stages of the past 20 years of dance music, their success seems partly down to a similar cohesion to the contemporary sonic trends as crossover acts and tour mates SBTRKT and Hot Chip, though through far more digitally nostalgic means and with decidedly different results. Disclosure hark back explicitly to the glossiest, most champagne and dress-code-laden moments of UK garage, as well as more retro four-to-the-floor sounds since permeated into modern house via acts like Julio Bashmore. A focus on the most infectious, smooth tropes of those pools of influence has given them a slick production style smothered in monstrous hooks and an unashamed utility of prominent vocal collaborations. If Jessie Ware’s sample was a mission statement of Disclosure’s ability to prop up already solid pop music with masterfully restrained dance music dynamics, they have since gone onto prove it with recent collaborators Sam Smith and Sinead Hartnett on ‘Latch’ and ‘Boiling’. That the disparately sample-torn ‘In Your Head’ pulses along even more hedonistically only goes to prove that these boys are far from fading in their move to dominate dance-pop, without losing their more underground following in the process.
Their live show still relatively new, Disclosure nevertheless excel in mixes boasting all of the above strains of influence fed into a contemporary and energetic DJ set. Having already torn the Boiler Room asunder twice in the last three months, on top of their touring the USA and Europe, they are set to dominate Digital’s appropriately huge dancefloor.
