The Show
Emma Rawicz and Fraser Smith – Weds 8th February 2023, 8pm.
One year on from their triumphant Festival Weekender, New Generation Jazz is back at the Ropetackle Arts Centre with the Festival Roadshow! Taking place across three Wednesday nights in February, it’s our chance to see six of the most exciting up-and-coming artists on the UK jazz scene. Each night includes a pair of double headline acts in the auditorium, plus free events in the foyer brought to you by the Jazz Futures educational programme.
Emma Rawicz
The young, multi-award winning saxophonist and composer is already making waves on the UK music scene. Described as “An astonishing new talent” (Jamie Cullum – BBC Radio 2), ‘a force to be reckoned with’ (Jazzwise) and ‘a fast-rising star’ (London Jazz News), Emma is a natural performer. Her music uniquely fuses her many influences, and her compositions range from lilting Afro Cuban inspired grooves to hard hitting modern jazz and funk numbers.
Fraser Smith
With a focus on swing, Fraser channels the sound and language of the big Tenor men. His music hark back to the golden ages of jazz, from 40s Kansas City through to 60s New York. Born in Birmingham, raised between the Midlands and Wales, Fraser began playing sax at the age of 15. He first came upon the music of Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and Ike Quebec via the Woolworth’s bargain bucket, and after studying hundreds of these solos, he considers himself a ‘practical scholar’, bringing these sounds of a bygone era into the modern stage.
There will be pre-show live music in the foyer from 7-8pm.
