Look out! Album of the year/Mercury 2010 contender in the house. Noah and the Whale main man Charlie Fink has gone dark on album number two and the result is a deeply melancholic but strangely regenerative work, as the title suggests.
Those with a squeamish disposition when it comes to other people baring their souls may want to look away, but this is well worth the investment. Rarely do albums have a unity of sound, giving the album a conceptual feel – in the best sense of the word.
Something spiritual is transpiring in this mini masterpiece, which once again appears to prove that suffering makes for the best art.
