Presented by African Night Fever and with live performances from Ozi Ozaa and Grupo Linkito.
Last night I was lucky enough to spend my evening sipping beer and dancing frantically at Africa Unite 2012. It was a night of wonderful African music, bringing the sunshine of Ghana and The Congo all the way to the sticky dance floor of Komedia, and along with the sunshine came the heat. It is, I have discovered, a complete waste of time to try and maintain a presentable appearance while attempting to dance in time to hypersonic drum beats! My pathetic dancing was soon shown up when a group of absolute pro’s took to the floor and showed us how it was done. How they move and with such rapidity is completely astounding, seriously, I’ve actually managed to pull many a muscle in the lower back-thigh region from my rubbish copy catting.
The atmosphere was so happy, everyone had a giant grin plastered on their faces, definitely a result of the music. It’s so uplifting it should be used by psychiatrists to help down-in-the-dumps patients. As well as making it impossible to be glum, the music does something else that happy pills definitely can’t… it nourishes the soul! When Ozi Ozaa were playing you could see and hear the love and joy they had for the music they were playing and those vibes filtered right down and throughout the club, even going to the toilets was a much more cheerful experience than usual!
The atmosphere made going out a much more social occasion than usual, which might sound a bit weird but for me it really was. Usually I don’t find myself talking to people I don’t know in clubs unless I’ve had one too many shandy’s, however there was such a lovely feeling in the air at Komedia last night that I must have befriended at least ten strangers. The music and the vibes connected that entire room in a way I haven’t experienced before, I even got flung around in the air by a particularly confident dancer at one point. You wouldn’t get that at Digital!
Where as usually after a night of drinking and dancing I feel unsurprisingly a bit rough the next day, today I have felt energised and replenished by the bonding and dancing that filled Komedia last night. All thanks to the wonderful music of Ozi Ozaa and Grupo Lokito. I hope they felt as much love from the audience as we received from them. They both put on some of the most impassioned sets I’ve heard for a long while and they deserve all the praise they can get! Roll on Africa Unite 2013…
