Black Mocha is an independent, modern cafe in the bustling bohemian North Laine area of Brighton owned by locals Heather and Paul Smith.
They offer Black Mocha hand roasted single origin coffee, brunch, cakes, sandwiches and snacks, with plenty of gluten free, vegan options and of course their signature dark 70% Madagascan hot chocolate mixed with espresso, the Black Mocha.

They’ve recently embarked on roasting their own coffee at their newly set up roastery in Hove using a lovingly refurbished 1990 Probat coffee roaster. They carefully select and ethically source single origin coffee beans for espresso, filter and decaf coffee.
They rotate their house espresso every 3 months and their talented baristas carefully brew each espresso on their customised La Marzocco espresso machine. Their decaffeinated coffee is a Sidamo Ethiopian bean that has gone through the C02 process which uses steam to extract the caffeine to help retain its original flavour.
They also offer hand brewed V60 filter coffee and you can find all of their single origin coffees available to buy in store or from their website. Click here to view their coffees
Chocolate & The Black Mocha
Everyday without fail they make fresh their signature Dark 70% Madagascan hot chocolate which happens to be dairy free and vegan. This is delicious on it’s own with its flavour notes of orange and cinnamon, however it was a ‘no brainer’ to add espresso to create a mocha. A traditional mocha contains frothy milk like a cappuccino so like a coffee without milk is known as ‘black’ , they gave birth to the Black Mocha. This is not for the faint hearted, it gives you a double hit from the caffeine in the coffee and from chocolate’s own stimulant called theobromine. The combined coffee/chocolate hit rushes around the body faster giving you the ultimate pick me up.
They make their cakes in house and have a wide selection of traditional gluten free bakes as well as homemade raw vegan cakes that are specifically gluten free, soy free, dairy free, vegan and refined sugar free. Their best seller is their vegan snickers made from wholefood ingredients; nuts, dates, raw cacao and peanut butter. With no added sugar, it’s amazing how tasty this healthier slice can be.
They have a breakfast and brunch menu available from 8:30am – 3pm and also offer a range of sandwiches, snacks and wraps with gluten free and vegan options. All food is made fresh on site.
They have a small retail area at the front of their cafe which reflects their offering, perfect for gifts. They have hand roasted single origin coffee, tea & coffee brewing equipment, a small range of bean to bar single origin chocolate bars and their highly addictive chocolate covered coffee beans.
