LIVE: Motorhead

Brighton Dome, 6th November 2008

Being home to one of the biggest and most vibrant musical epicentres in the UK, Brighton is routinely graced by international artists of the highest calibre. Today is no exception as rock’n’roll behemoths Motorhead descend upon our city to set pulses racing and make some ears bleed. After all, these guys once held the world record for being the loudest on Earth. Frankly, with 25 years of touring behind them it’s a wonder they can still hear.
They may not have had a mainstream hit for well over a decade, but Motorhead have an army of fans living deep underground, keeping their legacy alive. Tonight, in the cavernous confines of the Brighton Dome, an energised crowd of old school metal-heads and fresh-faced disciples convulse in solidarity to deafening signature anthems like “Killed By Death”, “Over The Top” and of course “Ace Of Spades” (well, it had to be done).

The group also pull out some tracks off their brand new album, “Motorizer”, which go down a storm with the hardcore few who’ve already bagged themselves a copy.Lemmy, Motorhead’s talismanic frontman and founding member, taunts the more reserved members of the audience. “Get up and dance motherfuckers”, he growls, proving he has done anything but mellowed with age.
There are some who may claim that they’re past it but there is no mistaking that Motorhead, one of the noisiest and filthiest bands on the planet, can still deliver as potent a performance as they did in their heyday. They are a British institution. They are rock royalty. And if the ringing in my ears is anything to go by, they have most definitely still got it.
