Firmly established as one of Brighton’s best-loved monthly clubs, SPELLBOUND – The Alternative 80s Night – rings in the New Year (and the new decade) at Komedia with its ALTERNATIVE 80s NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY! Think Siouxsie, Cure, Smiths, Bunnymen, PiL, Soft Cell, New Order, Sisters, Depeche Mode, Specials etc. There’s cheap Snakebite & Black, 80s-style smoke machines, period-relevant video projections, you get the idea! Please note that as this event is in Komedia’s smaller (140 capacity) room, NUMBERS ARE LIMITED, so early booking is advised. When they’re gone, they’re gone! More info at www.facebook.com/spellboundclub

Spellbound is an antidote to all the depressingly identical kitschy 80s nights out there. We ditch the cheese and play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our actual time span is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we’ll spin the odd track from outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of people who remember it first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it all as new. Think: post-punk, goth, new romantic, alternative rock, new wave, electro, gender benders, early indie, 2 tone ska, psychobilly, mod revival, synth, blitz kids, oddballs, effeminate futurists and one-hit wonders… Look out for the Eighties visuals on DVD and slide projections for extra period authenticity. Dressing up is encouraged, but not enforced.

Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY!

Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic – or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars – will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purpley-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £3.50, exclusively for Spellbound!

If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a shot of CHERRY SOURZ for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song – in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx – because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of Cherry Sourz!

There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, run by the lovely Bonnie and priced at £1 per item.

Sat 18 Jan, Sat 15 Feb and generally the third Saturday of the month through 2020.

But for now…

See you on the 31st!

Simon, Jayney and the Spellbound team x x x x
