Humanity is the sixth Outside In National, and the first to tour venues across the UK. Showcasing artworks by 80 Outside In artists, the exhibition highlights the vast variety and quality of works produced by artists who encounter barriers to the art world.
Humanity was on view at Sotheby’s in London in January and Project Ability in Glasgow in August and September. As Humanity returns to the home of Outside In, in Brighton and Hove, we reflect on the dual themes of ‘humanity’ and ‘home’ in two creative workshops held alongside the exhibition.
About the workshop
In this workshop, led by Outside In artist Jackie Bennett, you are invited to imagine your fantasy home, exploring interior design in miniature, to create a cosy room scene which can be displayed on a shelf, as a “book nook”. Learn how to weave a simple, poseable figure to add to the space.
During the workshop, there will be the chance to make a 3D house structure, decorating the interior or exterior, or both. This will be constructed from a cardboard box, which you can modify with a pitched roof and windows. Decorate the interior with coloured papers and fabrics and embellish with pens and collaged materials. You can also construct simple cardboard furniture and a figure(s) can be added.
Let your imagination flow, while being guided by the examples provided. Taking inspiration from “A Family Discussion Over Tea and Cake” by Charlotte Wainwright, one of the works in the Humanity exhibition, you may wish to create a family scene.
