Analogue-fetishist duo Zombie Zombie usher in Halloween in style as part of a set Vive La France! shows which will pre-empt January’s French music festival.
Almost as enamoured with the stylings of classic Horror veteran John Carpenter as their bank of vintage synthesisers, Zombie Zombie have long purveyed a particularly distinct sonic and aesthetic era. Explicit in their influences, one of their albums actually sees Zombie Zombie play John Carpenter, and the amusing stop-motion video for the representatively-titled “Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free” narrates Carpenter’s classic 1982 science fiction horror The Thing. Taking in the director/composer’s circuit board-tormenting soundtracks as much as his low budget grit, their compositions wreak bitter tension but also indulgent B-movie thrills, all driving rhythms and unwavering synth patterns.
Beyond the period gore though, Zombie Zombie follow in a tradition of French electro pop with an unbeatable knack for warm electronics and cinematic scope. Though by no means a pastiche of their knob-twiddling forebears, the duo’s sound is fittingly awash with prog dynamics and retro charm, something January’s Vive La France! festival promises in lashings.
With a new album out and a move into more Can-esque noodling, their live show will bring in plenty of sonic soars as appealing for krautrock musos as horror film fans, or anyone else for that matter.
£8 adv + BF, 19:00.
