Here’s a quirky one for you – as part of the Brighton Fringe, The Design Museum in London has got on the road to bring a series of talks celebrating Italian design flair to various cities in Blighty. And we lucky Brightonians get treated to one of the best in the series – Italian design on the road.
There’s something particularly unique about Italian cars, and if Clarkson, Hammond and May are to be believed, owning one is a motoring rite of passage. If you go weak at the knees for anything four-wheeled and Italian, be it the Ferrari 250 GTO California (AKA the car that Ferris Bueller borrows on his eponymously titled day off) or are tempted by rusty Alfa Romeos on eBay despite their notoriously bad reputation for rust and electrical issues, you’ll be at the front of the queue to hear Italian car industry heavyweights including James Irvine, Mario Bellini, Piero Lissoni, Antonio Citterio, Roberto Giolito, Claudio Silvestrin and Ross Lovegrove discussing its influence and excellence.
Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum and curator of the talks, comments: “Italy has a unique place in the landscape of contemporary design; it has a long history of innovation, rooted in the skill and craftsmanship of its traditional workshops, and continually refined by a commitment to innovation. Hosting one of the sessions in Brighton is a great opportunity for The Design Museum to spread the word to a knowledgeable audience outside London. Coinciding with the Brighton Festival will also help tap into the town’s energetic and thriving creative and design communities.”
So get yourself down to the Basement on May 12 whilst immaculately clothed men gesticulate widely and talk about their passion – and show us pictures of some gorgeous cars.
