Peggy Sue have grown up. From the light-hearted fun time girls of a few years ago, playing with toys in Brighton’s art venues, they have been shaking their rattles a little harder with the addition of a drummer and darker tales.
Single ‘Watchman’ seems to tell the story of going out to see someone you shouldn’t. Simple enough stuff, but the layered and wailed chorus of ‘I only came here to watch you,’ adds a darker element, emphasised by its crashing drums.
Though not originally looking for a traditional record deal, the band’s undeniable appeal has landed them with independent London based Wichita Recordings, and for those thinking this could lead to a corporate sell out, fear not – the organic and arty roots of these girls are firmly in place.
Album Fossils And Other Phantoms is out in April. “Most of the album is about endings in one way or another, the title refers to both the absences and remnants of those endings and the empty spaces in the artwork reflect this theme,” says singer Katy Young. With songs like this one, these are certainly spaces worth watching.
