Iona Hodgson creates nude portraits inspired by the aesthetics of 1920s and ’30s erotic French postcards. She had just moved her business to Brighton and launched a new website myeroticpostcard.com, offering original and intimate portraits to everyday women.
About Iona Hodgson
Iona studied a BA in Photography at the University of Westminster in London and then worked in various areas of the photographic sector for ten years in Spain. Since 2007 she has been working freelance as an editorial and commercial photographer. She began creating 1920’s erotic portraiture in Madrid in the same year and due to its popularity, has just set up My Erotic Postcard as a business in it’s own right.
Why this style of photography?
Iona loves 1920′s erotic postcard portraits because they are about real women and a true, pure appreciation for the female form in all its variations. This era was when erotic photography began to become prevalent and so has an inherent simplicity and elegance that is no longer present in more recent manifestations of erotic or nude photography. It’s this realism that appeals to Iona and she thinks that today’s women can relate to the “normalcy” of the models of this era. All women are beautiful, precisely because they are women, and that is what this project is about.
Where are the portraits taken?
The wonderful thing about these portraits is that they can be taken anywhere, mainly the shoot takes place in the client’s home, but it can also be done in a studio.
Why is My Erotic Postcard different to traditional glamour photography?
My Erotic Postcard offers something very unique and very far from traditional glamour photography. I think the main difference is that the 1920′s style portraits are about the subtle beauty, elegance and appeal of the female form, whereas glamour photography is about trying hard to be sexy within certain fixed parameters. Traditional glamour photography is usually taken by men for men, and Iona’s work is the opposite.
Who is My Erotic Postcard aimed at?
It is hoped that these portraits will appeal to all women, regardless of age or body shape. In fact the more curves the better! Every woman benefits from having an image of themselves that they feel good about. Many of the clients come to Iona so that she can capture the ‘real’ them in the best possible way. Usually women commission these portraits for themselves, but they can also be given as gifts or the ideal Christmas surprise!
