Roots veterans King Porter Stomp return to their hometown to celebrate the launch of their new album at The Old Market.
Musicians of a certain (new) age, King Porter Stomp have been dubbing out Brighton spaces for years now, with their inoffensive brand of good times ska/reggae. Initially part of the collective comm:UNITY, they’ve proven themselves more than just a counter-culture hangover, over the years. Together with bands like Bad Science (since re-hashed as Dizraeli & The Small Gods) and Samsara, their regular nights at venues such as Komedia maintained a determinedly extra-musical ethos, above all valuing the power of culture to enhance community and serve as a platform for alternative politics and ethical thinking.
While it’s no new development for dub reggae and ‘conscious’ hip hop to come hand in hand with these kind of politics (especially in Brighton and Bristol), it’s helped that King Porter Stomp have always brought the house down with an unmatched vibrancy to their performances. Calling together elements of funk, soul, afrobeat and punk to their easy hip-hop-flow-over-reggae formula, the seven-piece, led by MC Jonezy, have since gone on to tour with festival staple Chai Wallahs, attracting attention from Clash and NME.
The launch sees ‘The Shuffle’, their second full-length, surface in what will no doubt be a close-knit hubbub of laid-back togetherness, by and for the people.
