Holy Other, The Haunt, Thursday August 30

Conjointly one of the slickest and eeriest names on Tri Angle records, Holy Other’s first ever headline tour will reach Brighton mere days after the much anticipated release of his first ever full-length ‘Held’. He might perform live entirely concealed in a Ring Wraith-style cloak, but in the case of this producer-who-will-not-be-named, anonymity has only pushed him further into the limelight. Cast as support for the likes of Little Dragon, Beach House and Amon Tobin, Holy Other has long since proved his electronica credentials match his long-standing hipster appeal. (That isn’t to say that horn rims and ankle flashes won’t be the uniform at the Haunt for the occasion). He emerged to prominence at the forefront of ‘witch house’, a sub-genre now as infamous for the arbitrarity of it’s tag as it’s penchant for slowing Justin Beiber and Rebecca Black down eight times. However, Holy Other remains one of the few producers left over from the (cold)wave of doomy acts within that scene – if indeed it ever constituted one. Never relying on gimmicks, he retains association with the recontextualised R&B and hip-hop of acts like The Weeknd together with productions that stand alone as masterful electronica. Full to bursting with brooding ambience, bass smears and shimmering vocal streams, ‘Held’ will be sure to provide a night’s worth of EQ-smothering hypnotica ideal for The Haunt’s gloomy, stilted interior. Support comes from labelmate Vessel – riding on an imminent album release, his breed of dark electronica takes more cues from the Bristol scene that bore him, more swagger and wonky sound blips. Also conjuring up a live show, Vessel’s bass will sidle across bpms to provide perfect warm-up fare for Holy Other’s relentlessly, moreishly, murky downtempo. Fort Romeau, an exciting 2012 signing to LA label 100% silk, will fill out the leaning time with a DJ set of his hyper-immersive brand of house and techno, penned “electric body music” by the South London artist.

7pm, £8 adv.
