For the past 18 months Peggy Sue have successfully managed themselves, and it seems to be doing them good. Booking sell-out shows, writing, recording, and releasing this fantastic album ‘Fossils And Other Phantoms’ on April 5.
Having toured with musical heavyweights from Joan As Policewoman last year, Laura Marling and recently, Mumford and Sons, the sound of the album is far-reaching and confident.
Written in their sensitive poetic style, the strength here comes from improved skills as instrumentalists, now ranging from mandolin to accordion. A fruitful allegiance with drummer Olly Joyce improves the cohesion of the album further, as the band build on and pass the nu-folk style of their contemporaries.
Highlights include ‘February Snow’ and the sweet ‘Fossils’ with its gentle triangle percussion and detailed story. ‘The Shape We Made’ is a great end track, fantastically showcasing the female vocals and subtle harmonies with minimal drums and suspenseful verses.
Catch them at Resident Records in Kensington Gardens for an in-store show on April 7, and the band are lined up for a string of shows and festivals this May, beginning with a gig at the Royal Albert Hall!
8/10, released April 5 on Wichita Recordings
