Following the release of the catchiest song since Hanson’s “MMMbop”, “Nothin’ On You” rapper/producer/MC B.o.B has now released his debut album “The Adventures of Bobby Ray” through Atlantic Records. The rapper produced the majority of the album himself, and played multiple musical instruments including the piano, trumpet and French horn!
The album does hold some tunes such as “Bet I” and “Fame” which explain everything you hate about r’n’b nights. Some of the beats, rapping and melodies, to use the term lightly, are irritating, boring and frustrating to listen to! However the album also promises greatness.
“Lovelier Than You” and “Don’t Let me Fall” can only be described as beautiful. They are reminiscent of John Legend’s classic album “Get Lifted” but blend in a fresh, current flavour and will touch every r’n’b lover’s soul.
The album is also filled with some revolutionary excellence that hasn’t been heard in the world of rap for a while. “Airplanes” provides the first glimpse of the rocky edge to the album and is an unexpected glimpse of genius. Not quite Chris Martin and Kanye’s “Homecoming” but brilliant all the same.
“The Kids” which again uses a rocky tone as well as a sumptuous, soulful female voice. It is a real example of great experimental production and will undoubtedly become a huge hit. The uplifting tone to “The Kids” is continued through “Magic” and although it uses a cheesy rocky tune it is funky, fun and lively. If you couldn’t get “Nothin On You” out of your head, be warned; this is the catchiest tune on the album.
It is really no wonder that B.o.B went straight to the top of the US charts and has drawn a bounty of critical applause.
