Tonight sees the announcement of the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize winner for 2009. Populist choice Florence and the Machine are favourites with “Lungs”, at 9/4. Speech Debelle’s straight talking hip-hop album “Speech Therapy” is second favourite at 7/2,with Kasabian and Brighton’s Bat For Lashes also highly fancied. With other critics’ faves on the list in the form of the Invisible, Friendly Fires and the Horrors, it’s hard to pick an obvious winner – but then it always is. For every Elbow and Dizzee Rascal there’s been a Klaxons or an M People, so it’ll be interesting to see what the judges come up with this year.
