The undisputed champions of English folk rock bring their canonical sound to St George’s atmospheric interior
With a lineup as colourful as their musical output over the past 45 years, Fairport Convention have long since been considered a national institution. Their 60s folk albums met with chart success and support from John Peel, before a car crash in 1969 led to the deaths of one of the original lineup and another’s girlfriend – a concerted change in sound led to the followup Liege & Lief, widely considered the launchpad for English folk rock and electric folk. Since then they have released 25 studio albums, worked individually with acts like Jethro Tull and Richard and Linda Thompson, curated the seminal Cropredy Festival in Oxfordshire annually and toured with fluctuating members including founding member Simon Nicol, who remains in the seminal collective of folk pioneers.
Following in the footsteps of Martha Wainwright, Iron & Wine and Sigur Ros, Fairport set to bring 45 years of folk tradition and innovation to St George’s welcoming interior, thanks to Melting Vinyl’s reliable promotion. Expect old Sandy Denny numbers alongside a wealth of English folk classics and newer entries in the band’s indefatigable output.
