Deptford Goth @ Unitarian Church, Sat 11th May

Catch a bargain moment of heart-stirring singer-songwriting as rising talent Deptford Goth’s already cavernous, electronic melancholia echoes across the Unitarian Church.
A week before Brighton plays host to the biggest weekend of music all year (see this month’s issue of XYZ for the best the Great Escape has to offer), two of the most continually impressive acts to re-appear in Brighton for some time, premiere mixologist DJ Yoda at Concorde2 and chiefly soothing mother-plucker José González at The Haunt (as part of three-piece Junip). To avoid the dilemma of choosing between the two this Saturday, one of the UK’s brightest young things is playing a special concert at Brighton’s Unitarian Church which marries the above mentioned performers’ mastery of electronics and soft-voiced guitar-plucking.
Not entirely unlike resident everyone’s favourite post-dubstep singer-songwriter James Blake, Daniel Woolhouse AKA Deptford Goth – who is as beardy as he sounds, but confusingly from Peckham – embellishes his low-key melancholia with deft shades of echo and electronics. That’s to say, he’s one of those producer-balladeers, matching the soft gloom of his compositions with a rich palette of drum machines, synth strings and sparkling reverbs.
A couple of months after his debut album Life After Defo was met with widespread acclaim, Woolhouse graces Brighton’s Unitarian Church with a rare performance. Expect a simmering performance of delicate, introverted beauty, striking notes somewhere between early Bon Iver and recent trends in post-The xx gloomy bedroom-electronics. With the Unitarian Church’s intimate setting, Woolhouse’s electronic savviness and hushed melodies should hit home ever the stronger – and depending on which resonate the most, you might even be able to swan off to Concorde2 for DJ Yoda, or The Haunt to catch the end of Junip’s set. Saturday, sorted.
