The garage-grunge trio known simply as GANG release their latest double A-side single “Breath Before Death/Animalia” via digital download this week via Corner Shop Records. Originally hailing from Canterbury, but currently residing in Brighton, the three-piece play the kind of weighty, fuzzed out, lo-fi guitar noise that echoes the likes of late Nirvana, the Gories and fellow Brighton trio’s Tigercub and the Wytches.
With a trashy production style that sits somewhere between a spaghetti western and Detroit city’s underground scene in the mid-nineties, “Animalia” displays the band’s psychedelic leanings with tremolo guitar melodies and surfy mid-tempo rhythms. Frontman/guitarist Eric Tormey’s tortured vocal teeters on the edge of melancholy breakdown whilst simultaneously anchoring a chaotic backdrop of mammoth riffs and visceral Dave Grohl-esque drum pounding.
By the final chorus, you can’t help but bounce your head and shoulders along with teenage abandon.
Serving as the perfect juxtaposition to the aforementioned carnage, “Breath Before Death” is an altogether dreamier, yet no less hard-hitting affair, with watery, discordant guitars lulling you into an intoxicated stupor whilst haunting vocals muse on an excruciating fear of sleep.
The inescapable impression is one of nightmarish abandon, with echoes of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun and perhaps even a smattering of Conan Mockasin’s melodic surrealism thrown into the mix to satisfying effect.
Great effort lads! We can’t wait to hear more!
You can pre-order a physical 7″ vinyl copy of the double A-side release at the following link, with a release date of January 15 2016.
