Freebutt, 4th November 2009
Brighton’s Freebutt was packed to the rafters as Peggy Sue took over the age old venue with a stunning display of musical talent. The mature and powerful yet oh-so-soulful voices of Rosa Rex and Katy Klaw received a great reception as they opened the set singing in harmony, with their timing flawless, the drums provided the perfect base for the two girls to grip the crowds attention.
After the opener they went straight into crowd favourite ‘Lazarus’, with Rosa becoming a second drummer, allowing Katy’s voice to take centre stage. All three band members played the set with huge smiles clearly enjoying this homecoming gig after finishing a three week tour of America. They declared their time in The States was amazing and had influenced them greatly, which was obvious as they surprised the audience by playing a folky cover of a Missy Elliot song. Effortlessly they turned gagster rap into a bluesy indie cool. Singing the chorus together with no music their voices engulfed the captivated crowd who responded with huge cheers.
The band were relaxed throughout stopping at one stage to give a brief, although slightly awkward joke telling session, before getting back to what they do best. This time playing a new song called ‘February Snow’, which is from their forthcoming album due out in March. Rosa and Katy showed how musically gifted they are by chopping and changing between an array of instruments which included an accordion, a ukulele as well both electric and acoustic guitars. This constant use of different instruments kept the crowd anticipated and after finishing with ‘The Sea, The Sea’ which saw the girls use their most impressive instrument, their voices. They belted out the lyrics, over the top of some hard drums sending the crowd into a frantic mob screaming for more.
Politely and happily the band responded by giving the audience one more track, creating an excellent finale which only lifted the already feel-good atmosphere that had swept over the Freebutt, and led to Peggy Sue’s merch table selling their ‘Lover Gone EP’ to happy fans.
