The Zombie Ball: With Aeroplane

The Zombie Ball: With Aeroplane

Ocean Rooms, 31 October 2009

What’s that song? You know, the one that goes ‘t-t-t-t-t-t-t’… Is it a bird? No, it’s Aeroplane (Ouch, couldn’t resist).

Belgium lads Aeroplane dropped in, perhaps with light irony, to the Ocean Rooms this Halloween for the Zombie Disco. These are DJs who have defined themselves as somewhat devoted to bringing their fans away from ‘weighty beats’ and into the light; free from the constricting and harrowing pains of societies cultural boxes.

All sarcasm aside it’s hard to dislike Aeroplane; there’s just nothing out there quite like it. They’ve been compared to 2manyDJs but only as none of their tunes are made completely from scratch. They have worked on some of the biggest tracks, past and present and most famously covered ‘Paris’ by the Friendly Fires with none other than the magnificent Au Revoir Simone, a version which some might say was far better than the original and unarguably differing in everything accept the lyrics and melody.

Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca were brought up in the industrial suburbs of Brussels and maintain that this is the route of the daydreamer sound. Their music is gritty yet serene and it seems as though we’ve almost embraced them as our own, not something which seems to happen so often with a lot of pop based European music. They played, earlier in the year, at Coalition where the venue was packed and and all who saw them had no words to say accept for a vague overwhelmed statement, something along the lines of ‘simply awesome’.

Sadly this Halloween witnessed a rather sad state of affairs. The crowd were on it – all 50 of the devoted party hard clubbers. Maybe it was because of the number of house party Facebook invites one tends to attract at this time. It was such a shame, we do hope this doesn’t stop them from coming back to Brighton on a better day.
