This classical music festival takes place across 13 incredible venues across the city including St Bartholomew’s Church, The Old Market, St George’s Church and Komedia Studio. Based around a specific theme, the eclectic programme includes musical and arts performances, as well as talks and workshops, with the aim of encouraging new attitudes towards approaching and presenting music from the past.
The festival’s theme for 2017 sets to dig deep into our past, exploring the many routes along which classical music has travelled, and tracing the origins of the genre and its instruments. Throughout the festival, you can enjoy traditional music from many parts of the world and have the opportunity to learn how it blended seamlessly with the more refined music we associate with classical today.
Just a few of the highlights from the festival include JS Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Nov 12th, 7pm, St Martin’s Church) a new production of Rameau’s Pygmalion (Oct 28th, 3pm, Sallis Benney Theatre), Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi (Nov 8th, 8pm, Old Market) and Through Lonesome Woods with acclaimed folk duo The Askew Sisters (Nov 2nd, 8pm, Ropetackle Arts Centre).
If you’ve never heard this kind of music before and want a great taster then, check out the BREMF Clubnight at the Rose Hill (BN1 4JL) on November 4th, where you’ll have the chance to hear five emerging early music bands perform live music from medieval and folk to improv and classical – all over a nice pint.
