ABOUT THIS SESSION
Pretty Smart Cookies presents HERstory: Unsung Black & Brown Women Who Changed the World in Art — a celebration of the power of art, representation, and resistance featuring acclaimed printmaker, book artist, and educator Sarah Matthews. Her work and lived experience offer a powerful lens for young women exploring identity and purpose through art.
WHAT TO EXPECT
✨ Speaker Presentation (15–20 min) — Sarah shares her journey as an artist and the significance of representation in the arts
🎨 Hands-On Art Demo (15–20 min) — A guided creative activity participants can follow from home with basic supplies (paper, markers, pencils)
🎤 Girl Presentations — Three PSC participants will spotlight a Black, Latina, and Indian women artists — including Augusta Savage, María Izquierdo, and Amrita Sher-Gil.
❓ Live Q&A (10 min) — Participants are encouraged to engage in a live Q&A with our guest speaker
ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER
Sarah Matthews is a printmaker and book artist whose work challenges racial stereotypes and celebrates the beauty, intelligence, and dignity of all people. Her pieces are held in the permanent collections of the National Museum of African American History & Culture, Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and George Washington University’s Gelman Library, among others.
She holds an MA in Art & the Book from the Corcoran College of Art & Design at GWU, an MBA with a Marketing Concentration, and a BS in Sociology from Bowie State University. She currently teaches Artist Books at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Pretty Smart Cookies (PSC) is a cultural empowerment organization serving teen girls ages 12–18 through monthly virtual sessions focused on mentorship, cultural education, and helping young women discover their superpowers.
