US dream pop band Beach House released their third album ‘Teen Dream’ earlier this year. Checking in before the start of their European tour, Victoria (vocalist, organ) talks to us about Brighton, inspiration & what’s next for Beach House
Weaving dreamy harmonies in a melodic tapestry, listening to their music is like bathing in a warm hazy sunshine, you can stretch out and peer smugly over at a world less fortunate for not being able to hear what you can hear.
The group are Victoria Legrand (vocals, organ) and Alex Scally (guitars, keyboard) and we caught up with them ‘Living and Loving’ (Victoria’s words) before they prepare to start their tour this side of the Atlantic. So what do they miss about home whilst they’re away on tour?
“Our practice space where we write everything” Victoria tells us. “…being surrounded by all of the instruments and objects that inspire us, and the community of friends and artists that continue to flourish. ”
Speaking of artists, Victoria was borne of musical stock, her uncle being accomplished composer Michel Legrand. It seems she has been surrounded by creativity from a young age. But what’s the inspiration behind the uniquely beautiful music produced by this twosome?
“It’s always been intuition and feeling.” Says Victoria. “We’ve toured heavily in the last 4 years.  The journey into the world, on the road, has brought us many amazing and inspiring experiences.  Touring is part of the creative process for us.  We learn a great deal about our music and about the future of our creative world.”
And this journey is reflected in the development of sound, with the band clearly maturing between the release of debut album Beach House, through to second album Devotion and the recent Teen Dream. “Each album has its own world” Victoria tells us,  “None of them could have existed without the others.  They are families of songs, collections.  Our language and how we create our music has gotten more intense and fluid.”
And what of the future for Beach House? What’s next? Victoria explains, “I see developments continuing to unfurl.  Teen Dream is just a part of our evolution as artists.  We are very excited for the winter months and Spring to create.
In closing, on the subject of the show in Brighton, and what the band get up to whilst they’re here with us, Victoria tells us how fond they are of our city-by-the-sea. “We have been to Brighton several times, at Audio and Corn Exchange.  We love it!  We always feel a magical energy in Brighton – I once had an amazing night swim in the frigid waters. ”
