SUMMARY:VIRIDITAS: HILDEGARD – THE MYSTIC LEGACY
DESCRIPTION:Voice are Emily Burn\, Victoria Couper &amp\; Clemmie Franks. C
elestial Sirens a female voice choir directed by Deborah Roberts and Lauri
e Stras.\n&nbsp\;\nStarting with the mystical chants of Hildegard\, this p
rogrammer introduces some of the extraordinary range of music that would h
ave performed\, and even composed by cloistered nuns in the middle Ages an
d early Renaissance.\n&nbsp\;\nMore familiar composers include Gilles Binc
hois (c.1400-1460) and Josquin des Prez (c.1440-1521)\, heard alongside Gr
egorian chant and anonymous music from two 14th-century Spanish manuscript
: the Las Huelgas Codex from a convent in Burgos\, and the Llibre Vermell
from Montserrat in Catalonia.\n&nbsp\;\nMusic from Italian convents will i
nclude tuneful Laude that the mystic Caterina Vigri (Saint Catherine of Bo
logna) enjoyed singing with her sister nuns\, and from the 16thcentury 5-p
art motets that may have been composed by Lucrezia Borgia’s daughter\, t
he nun Leonora D’Este. Hildegard’s music has inspired a number of cont
emporary composers. The concert ends with music by Stevie Wishart and Marc
us Davidson\, including works specially written for Voice.\n&nbsp\;\nJoin
us for Viriditas: the music and life of Hildegard von Bingen\, a unique se
ries of events exploring the contemporary resonances of the music and life
of one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages. Hildegard von Bin
 gen (1098 - 1179) was a visionary\, mystic\, poet\, healer\, naturalist an
d theologian. She was also the world’s first named composer – and the
most prolific and original musician of her time.\n&nbsp\;\nViriditas (Lati
n for “green truth” or “greening power”) speaks to the intrinsic a
nd vital relationships that exist between all living beings. The concept i
s central to the systematic botanical and medicinal texts - for which Hild
egard is recognized as the founder of German naturalism - and is a theme k
ey to her life-long ecstatic visions that are strikingly documented in the
poetic lyrics and soaring melodies of her music\, and in the texts and il
luminations of her theological and cosmological treaties.\n&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\
;\n&nbsp\;\nA post-concert conversation will take place with Professor Lau
 rie Stras.\n&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;\nPay What You Decide\n&nbsp\;\nThere
