SUMMARY:The Science of ADHD: Navigating Neurodiversity in a Neurotypical Wo
 rld
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this enlightening talk where Dr Samantha Hiew teach
es us the in’s and out’s of ADHD\n\n\n\nA simple scroll through Instag
ram or TikTok and you’ll be left questioning: do I have ADHD? The rise i
n ADHD in adults is undeniable. But only over the last decade has ADHD bee
n formally recognised in the UK. According to ADHD UK charity\, there is a
total estimate of 2.6 million people in the UK with ADHD. But only approx
imately 10-20% of individuals with ADHD will be treated.\n\nThe ADHD crisi
s in the UK points to a bottleneck in diagnosis\, lack of support and thos
e diagnosed with ADHD later in life are then faced with a century-old stig
ma.\n\nThe talk goes into the neuroscience and neurochemistry that explain
s the ADHD traits you see\, how self medicating behaviours can look like "
culture"\, how it presents differently in women than men\, to building you
r own ADHD owner’s manual.\n\nThis talk destigmatises ADHD and highlight
s how living in a neurotypical world has not worked for us\, how knowing h
ow our brain is wired can help us understand\, accept\, and have compassio
 n towards ourselves.\n\nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7.30pm - Come d
own early to grab a good seat!\n\nFollow us on IG @seedtalks\n\nDr Samanth
a Hiew is a storyteller with a medical science PhD\, specialising in demys
tifying ADHD &amp\; neurodiversity. Sam founded ADHD Girls in 2020 before
she was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 40\, and identifies as an autist
ic\, dyspraxic\, and Touretter. She is passionate about reframing the medi
cal labels given to neurodivergents\, where we see each individual as more
than their diagnosis. Sam has spoken at over 40 organisations to date and
hosts the Utopia podcast where she uncovers hidden stories of neurodiverg
ence across culture\, race\, high achievers\, parenting\, and learning dis
ability. Her work received multiple nominations of Stereotype Buster and C
ommunity Choice Awards at the 2022 Celebrating Neurodiversity Awards. \n\n
