In many of Constable’s paintings, including the newly displayed Colliers unloading on Hove Beach (1824), the sky takes up much of the composition, and even his rough small sketches of clouds are now highly-prized and much discussed works of art. Curator Alexandra Loske will take a closer look at Constable’s skies, why he declared that he was ‘a man of clouds’, and provide the scientific and conceptual context to Romanticism’s fascination with the sky and meteorological conditions. The talk will also discuss how contemporary artists still use the fleetingness of clouds as inspiration.
