 our guest speaker\, Peter Bauer and host\, Allison Ferns:Dr Peter Bauer MD
  FRCA\, Consultant Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Sussex\, has ‘pu
 t thousands of patients to sleep’\, carefully monitoring their heart\, l
 ung and brain functions. His longstanding interest in neurobiology since M
 edical School led him to spend nights in a Sleep Laboratory in Giessen\, G
 ermany\, and pursue further education in neuroanatomy\, culminating in a o
 ne year research scholarship in Tokyo\, Japan. After a clinical attachment
  in Zürich\, Switzerland\, he got jet lagged when travelling on to work i
 n New Zealand. He was awarded his Medical Doctorate upon return to his alm
 a mater in Lübeck\, Germany\, before moving to work for NHS England where
  he has trained and worked as anaesthesiologist and perioperative physicia
 n for the last 25 years\, enriched by a six months clinical research Fello
 wship in Jena\, Germany along the way. He routinely employs biofeedback\, 
 deep breathing\, dreamscape\, ‘hypnotic conversation’ and sedation tec
 hniques in conjunction with electroencephalography (EEG) to manage periope
 rative anxiety\, cardiovascular\, respiratory and metabolic problems and h
 elp his patients find the right sleep.‘in somno securitas’ - safety in
  sleep - is the motto of the Association of Anaesthetists for good reason.
 Allison Ferns is Brighton through and through. Well\, Telscombe Cliffs\, a
 ctually. She has a career spanning decades and a range of media – includ
 ing commercial and public service radio\, TV\, magazines\, stage and scree
 n. She even interned at Number 10 Downing Street\, performed in a girl ban
 d and sold fudge on Brighton Palace Pier. She’s been recognised by the r
 adio industry with a raft of awards and nominations to her name. Allison a
 lso comperes events and performs in theatre.Allison is a presenter and rep
 orter for BBC Radio Sussex. As host of Allison Ferns' Breakfast Show she's
  been waking us up with a smile for the last five years. She knows better 
 than most the importance of a good night's sleep!
