 n Jazz News8PM - ATLANTICUSATLANTICUS is a unique British-American musical
partnership bringing together two powerfully distinct musical personaliti
es to explore their common interest in the rich transatlantic heritage of
jazz.Tenor saxophonist and composer Peter Fraize has established a formida
ble presence as player\, composer and educator in his native Washington DC
and across the East Coast jazz circuit. A trip to the UK in 2016 saw him
establishing a connection with keys man Terry Seabrook\, a prime mover on
Brighton’s vibrant jazz scene with a national reputation as a forward-lo
oking and original bandleader. The pair bonded over their mutual fascinati
on with the timelessly popular Hammond organ jazz format\, looking back to
the masters of the genre such as Jimmy Smith and visionary modernists lik
e Larry Young\, and forward to contemporary practitioners Joey DeFrancesco
and Larry Goldings. Swiftly recruiting firebrand young trumpeter Jack Ken
don and powerhouse drummer Milo Fell to complete the classic quartet line-
up\, the new band set out on a comprehensive UK touring schedule that incl
uded a show-stopping performance at Love Supreme Jazz Festival alongside a
ppearances at a string of major UK jazz clubs in 2018. At the end of that
20-date tour\, the band entered the studio to record their debut album Blu
e Haven in a single day\, capturing the excitement of their live set and t
he almost supernatural road-tested empathy of the band in eleven thrilling
performances. They have since embarked upon several month-long tours of t
he UK\, recording a follow-up album at the conclusion of each. The most re
cent\, 2023’s Oceanic Tour\, featured the premiere of the multimedia ‘
Oceanic Suite’ which explored themes of wildlife\, sustainability and cl
imate change\, supported by Arts Council England. The band's repertoire is
based around original compositions by Peter and Terry\, with some re-worki
ngs of material from the classic repertoire. Blue Haven and 2022’s Upstr
eam encompass a range of the classic sounds associated with the organ genr
e\, revitalised for the contemporary scene: the hot modal swing of ‘That
’s What’\, the punchy hard bop stylings of ‘Blue Haven’ and the bl
uesy swagger of ‘Let’s Walk’ are balanced by the intricate boogaloo
groove of ‘Swank’\, the angular funk of ‘Upstream’ and the montuno
-infused misterioso vibe of ‘The Mentalist’. “Blue Haven was a chanc
e for us both to really get into something new\,” says Peter. “Terry r
eally has all the proper Hammond organ skills on top of the modern harmoni
c chops that makes him a great match for my music.” “For me jazz is a
global music\, but it has its history in the United States and this projec
t is an opportunity for me to further my connection with the whole amazing
story of American jazz - there’s a particular energy in Peter’s playi
ng and his compositions that is so inspiring!” says Terry.ATLANTICUS is
a fresh take on a deep tradition\, given new impetus by the transatlantic
meeting of four superb musicians. Utterly authentic\, effortlessly swingin
g\, it acknowledges its roots without ever being overwhelmed by them to pr
oduce a truly original and satisfying statement.
